Double Podium at the IronBike Marathon

Sally Bigham and Alban Lakata raced a successful Ischgl Ironbike Marathon. Sally came away with the win, while the Marathon World Champion settled for third.

The Ironbike Marathon in Ischgl, Austria is well known for being a challenging event.  The facts speak for themselves.  79km with 3820 meters of climbing, and a maximum altitude of an impressive 2853m.

Sally’s race went according to plan from the beginning.  After just a couple of kilometres she had formed a gap over the other riders, and it was a lead that she didn’t ever give up.  After 5hr14:45 the win was hers, 25 minutes ahead of second place.

“I felt so strong.  The win was great, and the course was difficult, but breath-taking.”

Alban returned as a veteran of the event.  What was new for him though was starting with the World Champion’s Jersey.  Just one week after the taking the championship, preparation wasn’t ideal.  The week had seen a number of press interviews, a lot of recovery and a little training.  It was therefore a welcome result to finish in the top three behind Mirko Celestino (ITA) and Karl Platt (Ger).  As Alban said after the race, “the third position today was good.  I crashed, and didn’t have a great pre-race, but I am very pleased all things considered.”
