ROAD TO LEADVILLE Part 26: NEW RACE BIKE
Dave Wiens gives his thoughts and tips leading to this years Leadville 100 MTB Race.
Monday August 9, 2010 – Today was a TCB day. Work, house, Leadville prep, etc. Not much as for training, by plan…the one I made last night! I went to the gym for likely my last weight workout before the race; nothing special, just more of the same with similar weight (lots of 5lb and 10lb plates!), reps and sets. I did remember my shuffle this time, which pleased me.
I put the final touches on my race bike and took it out for an easy spin on a trail above Western State College called the Contour Trail. The Contour is 200 vertical above town and dead flat singletrack. It goes for many miles to the east and a little ways to the north. It’s a great place to get a new bike dialed in and to give the body an active break. My 26’er bike is sweet! It sounds like this will be the year of the 29’ers at Leadville as many of the top racers will be riding them. Even Lance has a sweet new 29’er hardtail.
Some new entrants, at least to me, that will be lining up on Saturday include Ned Overend, Tinker, Jeremiah Bishop and Chris Sheppard. I wonder about Josh Tostada. I haven’t seen a start list nor heard that he’ll be racing but I know he’d be tough and a great addition to the field. Ned and Tinker, how cool is that? Me and Ned and Tinker add up to about 150 years old!
We’re watching Scrubs and the main guy just said, “I don’t have anything of interest to say.” Funny, I feel the same way right now so I’m going to stop here. I’m not sure what I will do for training tomorrow. This is the funny time: all of the training is done, now you just have to figure out the best way to ride to bring out the very best on Saturday. Quien sabe?
