Wiens of Topeak Ergon beats Armstrong for 6th consecutive Leadville 100 win
The highest mountain bike race in the World.
On August 9th, Dave Wiens (Gunnison, CO) of Topeak Ergon took his 6th consecutive win at the Leadville 100 mile mountain bike race. As the highest mountain bike race in the World (starting at 10,200 ft), the Leadville 100 saw a show down on the dirt in 2008. Seven Times Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong arrived in Leadville to challenge Wiens for the win...along with a host of other top mountain bikers from around the USA.
With 1,200 racers toeing the line, the race set off at 6:30 AM under cloudy and cool skies. After 4 hours of racing, Armstrong and Wiens quickly separated themselves from the rest of the field. For the next 3 hours Wiens and Armstrong would ride together and climb an estimated 14,000 feet in and around the mountains of Leadville, CO.
After 6 hours and 45 minutes of racing, Wiens crossed the line first breaking the course record he previously set last year. Armstrong would finish 2nd, roughly 2 minutes back after admitting to Wiens that he had him beaten.
Also racing for Topeak-Ergon was Jeff Kerkove (Ft Collins, CO). Jeff would go on to finish in 8 hours 2 minutes in his first Leadville 100 attempt. This would earn him 27th place overall.
