Trans German Stage 3: Alban takes 2nd.

In a day that saw Lakata taking second place, Sally Bigham secured 5th place again, while Robert Mennen confirmed that the problems of yesterday were behind him with a 10th place finish.

The third stage of the Trans-Germany was somewhat of a sprint race.  55km and 1830 meters to climb through the German area of Algau shouldn’t be under-estimated.  The average speed of over 25 km/h though clearly speaks of a fast race.

For the Austrian Alban Lakata, it was important to ride a good stage today on the back of stage 2’s win, and to minimise the deficit that he has to overall leader Christoph Sauser (Specialized Factory Racing). Unfortunately it was not his day “Susi (Sauser) was super strong today.  On the last climb I couldn’t follow his attack.  It is a shame, but I am hopeful about tomorrow’s longer stage – I will search out my chance there” Lakata said, following the finish.

Sally Bigham, who recently had to take a break from competition owing to injury, rode a strong ride today, to finish fifth.  This puts her in third overall.  Following the race, Sally was upbeat “I will try on the final stage to make it to the podium.  A third place over-all would be fantastic”.

For Robert Mennen things were also a lot more positive.  The stomach problems appear to have been solved, and he was able to finish in tenth.

The final stage tomorrow will see the field riding a 75km long course with 1360 meters to climb, before the final finish line in Bregenz on lake Constance.

Alban Lakata and Team Manager Dirk Juckwer are clearly happy with the day’s result.
