Trans-Germany Stage 2: A stage Win for Alban Lakata

Alban Lakata won the second stage of the Trans-Germany out sprinting Sauser. Sally Bigham secured fourth place on the day while Robert Mennen struggled through the stage despite stomach problems.

It was an amazing finale to the second stage.  Alban Lakata and Christoph Sauser (Specialized Factory Racing) were in the lead for the 75km stage.  By the last descent, Lakata was ahead.  Now there was just 50m to the line.  It was now a head to head sprint.  The World Championships Silver Medalist against the previous day’s winner.  Lakata held it, and took the win.  In the ‘king of the mountains’ competition he also defended and retained his second place.

Lakata’s response to the day “Despite the cold my legs felt really good today.  Everything went really well. It was great, and I am really pleased with the win.”

Sally Bigham also had a good day, after the previous stage’s fifth place.  On the second stage, the British Marathon Champion finished fourth.  “The rain, the mud and the cold really do make things difficult out there.  All the same, I had a good day, and am looking forward to tomorrow” she said in  an interview post race.

For Robert Mennen things were different.  He had a bad day and was struggling with stomach problems.  It meant he was unable to keep food down.  It combined with the poor weather to really make things difficult.  “I couldn’t better my 32nd place today.  I just didn’t have it in me” Mennen said after the finish.

The third stage is more of a sprint.  At 55km long with 1830m of climbing, it is a short stage.
