Transalp 2009 Stage 1: Mittenwald to Alpbach. Snow, in July?
First stage cancelled owing to adverse weather conditions.
It astonished both Team Topeak Ergon riders. Dave Wiens (USA), member of the mountain bike hall of fame, and recently defended Austrian Marathon Champion, Alban Lakata weren’t expecting it. The night before they were due on the start line, the temperatures dropped considerably. Rain in the valley meant only one thing above 1000m – heavy snowfall. This left the organiser with only one option, to cancel the first stage to avoid putting the athletes and support crews in danger. “Naturally it is a disappointment. We would like to start the race, but the weather even here in Mittenwald has really come in. We will make our way over to Alphach, and put in some training.” Lakata said of their plans for the day.
Tomorrow we hope will be a different story.
