Kurschat’s season continues to shine while Irina finishes strong in 2nd place
World Cup Series Starter in South Africa
Following his victory last week, Kurschat superb start of the season form was once again apparent over the Easter break, in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. In his strongest showing in a World Cup ever, he finished in fifth place. The career best comes now that he has finished his studies. It is his intention to show that the front of the pack is actually where he belongs.
The race didn’t start well. After just 100m, there was a mass pile up. Kurschat had to dismount and although he avoided being tangled up in the unfolding drama, it dissolved his 4th row start, and put him in 25th place. The chase would now begin. Lap after lap he moved forward, until in the final loop he was facing the rear tyres of Christoph Sauser (Specialized) and Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower). The German attacked the Swiss duo on the final climb, and only Sauser was able to follow. It was neck and neck, but across the line, Kurschat was only 3 seconds behind Sauser, and 1:20 minutes behind the winner, José Antonio Hermida (Merida Multivan). Following the race, with a beaming smile, Kurschat used the words of the great fictional character Hannibal Smith “I love it when a plan comes together”.
Irina Strong in 2nd Place Finish
We already knew about Irina Kalentieva’s good form on the Saturday morning. The winter break appears to have been well used.
From the gun, the Russian flew and made it to the first climb in the lead, however, the eventual winner, Elisabeth Osl (Austria) pulled ahead. The second place was something that was not under threat at any point within the 1:42:57 of the race. “It was a long winter, but my form is good. I am looking forward to Offenburg.” She said, from the finish in South Africa.
Robert Mennen Proud of Results
The young and new team rider Robert Mennen started his race from the rear of the pack. With a good ride though, and with points going right back to 60th position, getting something on his scorecard was the aim of the day. He rode a strong race, pulling out the stops on the descents and passing rider after rider. With his 38th place finish, it was also the best of his career and a result which the young rider can be proud of.
“I am completely overjoyed. To have come to Africa alone was a fantastic experience, and with the points and the experience that the trip has brought me it has been more than worth it”. He said flowing the event.
